Rick Doblin just turned 70, and I am writing this blog post to share my appreciation and respect for this man.
I don’t know Rick personally very well – we had two great chats on my Enhanced Therapy Podcast – but I know that he is a colorful, courageous, focused, and creative individual, who has committed his life to advancing the well-being of others while at the same time creating a life of love and joy for himself. In this way, he is a rare example of someone who lives a meaningful, joyful life, while at the same time being a huge gift to others.
Rick’s greatest public accomplishment is his over-three-decades-long dedication to making MDMA-Assisted Therapy available for healing. Long before anyone thought it possible, one year after MDMA became illegal in 1985, Rick had a clear vision and started MAPS for the sole purpose of bringing MDMA AT back to the healing space, legally. He then got his PhD in Public Policy to learn the laws around the US drug approval process – well just a little side gig to advance his vision! Later, he initiated a years-long FDA approval research process, and founded MAPS Public Benefit Corporation, a for-profit pharma company that funnels all its profits right back to MAPS the non-profit, thus securing this sacred healing space from the pitfalls of profit. MAPS has grown exponentially in recent years, and after years of FDA research, Rick and his now large crew is a year, or so, away from the FDA approving the first ever psychedelic assisted therapy for medical use. This is a truly spectacular achievement!
To top it all off, Rick says that after MDMA-Assisted Therapy becomes available, all he wants for himself is to become an MDMA-Assisted Therapist. If that’s not sweet then I don’t know what is. Please put me on your waitlist Rick!!!
MDMA-Assisted Therapy is a very powerful tool, with unprecedented ability to heal trauma and relationship. This is a gift of magnanimous proportions, as the approval of MDMA-Assisted Therapy will likely initiate a major cultural shift in how we heal trauma and relationships.
Well, thank you Rick for MDMA-Assisted Therapy, and for modeling for us how to live a life of purpose, joy, and service.
Happy 70th, and may you be around for a long time to spread your beautiful energy.
